Jane Lydbury was born and brought up in London. She first studied English Literature from 1972-75, and then Illustration at Camberwell College of the University of the Arts. While there, she studied wood engraving with John Lawrence. After graduating in 1981 she became involved with the Camberwell Press, a private press within the college, and her first commission was to produce a limited edition book illustrated with engravings to commemorate the building of the Globe Theatre in Southwark. Her work was featured in an exhibition about the contemporary private press movement at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

She then pursued a career as a freelance illustrator, mainly of books, and had work commissioned by, among others, The Folio Society, Oxford University Press and Penguin Books.

She has exhibited with the Royal Watercolour Society and was a prize winner at their Open Exhibition in 2005. She has also exhibited with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, The Society of Wood Engravers and The Greenwich Printmakers Association. In 2007 she was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition for the first time.
